ARM presents at TEFMA23 Conference
12 September 2023

ARM director Mark Raggatt and ARM principal Amber Stewart were on the lineup of speakers at this year’s TEFMA (Tertiary Education Facilities Management Association) conference in Sydney, held 10-13 September 2023. The pair presented ARM’s recent work at the Sydney College of the Arts.
The main objective of the project was to repurpose the Old Teachers’ College building, a heritage-listed site designed by George McRae, into a modern facility that could accommodate various art forms, including sculpture, ceramics, and more. The challenge was to strike a balance between preserving the historical significance of the site and integrating contemporary functionality.
One of the noteworthy achievements of the project was its success in unifying students from different art disciplines. Previously dispersed across the large Rozelle site, the move to the repurposed Old Teachers’ building has encouraged collaboration and interdisciplinary projects, enhancing the overall student experience.
The presentation highlighted ARM’s research-driven approach to the project. To identify key project drivers our team conducted qualitative research including archival research, site visits, and interviews with stakeholders. This comprehensive approach ensured that the redevelopment was not only visionary but also practical and efficient.
Additionally, the consultative approach taken by ARM fostered a sense of identity and community for the college in its new location.
